ChatGPT Ads in Germany and Europe

ChatGPT Ads in Germany and Europe

Management Summary

  • Advertising in ChatGPT now also in Germany

  • Ads will be visible directly within ChatGPT chats

  • The AI's responses should remain unchanged

ChatGPT Ads marks the launch of a new advertising channel in the European digital market.

The traditional search engine continues to face competition, and with it, digital advertising is now changing as well. Since August 24, 2026, ChatGPT Ads have been available in Germany and other European markets, including France, Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Spain. The advertising model is being introduced in a total of 31 European countries. As a result, ChatGPT is no longer used exclusively for information searches and idea generation, but is also becoming a new advertising environment.

This is particularly relevant for businesses because a fundamental shift in the customer journey is emerging: users do not formulate their needs as search terms, but rather as specific questions arising from conversational contexts. Brands can gain visibility in natural, familiar contexts, while users must adapt to a new form of advertising.‍

What are ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads are paid advertisements displayed within the ChatGPT interface. They appear below the actual response and are designed to be clearly recognizable and labeled as advertisements. An ad may include images, the company name and logo, a title, descriptive text, and a landing page.‍

Currently, this change affects users of the free ChatGPT Free and Go plans. No ads are currently being served to users on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans. Users who are believed to be under 18 years of age also do not receive ads. Additional restrictions apply to sensitive topics such as politics and health.

It’s important to note that OpenAI emphasizes a technical separation between advertising and the AI model’s responses. Ads are not intended to influence the organic responses. However, they can, of course, influence users’ attention and, consequently, their subsequent decisions. The ads are not supposed to be “visible” to the language model itself, so they cannot be directly addressed in a conversation.‍

A New Advertising Standard for Brands?

The key difference from other, traditional forms of online advertising lies in the context. ChatGPT uses the conversation to determine what users are currently looking for, what problem they want to solve, or what criteria are important to them. Ads can be tailored to this “decision context.”

That’s exactly what makes ChatGPT Ads appealing to brands: An ad doesn’t necessarily appear based on a single keyword, but rather in the context of the intent behind a conversation. This can have a major impact on purchasing behavior, but it also changes the requirements for campaigns.‍

With Google, for example, advertisers could bid on a specific keyword. ChatGPT Ads work in a more context-based way. Advertisers can define topics and contexts in which their offer is relevant—but precise delivery based on individual keywords is not guaranteed.

In addition, opportunities could also arise for small and medium-sized businesses, which would otherwise be at a clear disadvantage against major brands in the battle for budget, since organic conversations with AI often have a more niche character, and specialized ads could therefore gain in importance.

For brands, this means a shift in perspective: fewer keyword lists, and a better understanding of target audiences, situations, and needs.

Evaluating Key Metrics Critically

OpenAI's own Ads Manager provides insights into impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, CPC, CPM, and conversions, among other metrics. However, its reporting capabilities are currently much more limited than those of established advertising platforms.

For companies, this means, first and foremost: Test early on, but don’t be too quick to equate the results with those of established channels. Brand impact and influence on the customer journey, in particular, cannot be fully captured by individual conversion figures.

It also remains to be seen how users will respond to the ads. Much here depends on whether OpenAI and ChatGPT implement them correctly and in a meaningful way. Users often view the AI as a very personal entity and interact with it in a highly personal manner, placing a great deal of trust in its responses and results. Whether the new ads will build on this trust or undermine it remains to be seen. In the long run, however, it’s reasonable to assume that, given the already widespread ubiquity of advertising, its appearance on ChatGPT will also be accepted.

What will change for users?

For users, the main change at first is the context in which advertising takes place. Ads are becoming part of a conversation that, until now, has felt primarily like a personal dialogue.

In this context, advertising must be clearly separated from the actual response and labeled as such. In the EU, there are also specific requirements regarding personalization: Information from the chat history may only be used for personalized advertising if users have expressly consented to such personalization. Without consent, advertising is delivered based on the context of the current prompt.

The fact that ads appear in ChatGPT should not come as too much of a surprise to most people. For one thing, the way users interact with the language model lends itself perfectly to an advertising context; for another, the massive investments made in recent years to develop and optimize the application must be offset by expanded funding models.

The Next Step in Digital Marketing

ChatGPT Ads mark the beginning of a new era in digital marketing. For brands, this opens up an additional channel to reach users in a new setting where they ask questions, articulate their needs, and prepare to make decisions.

At the same time, the advertising system is still in an early stage of development. Features, formats, reporting, and targeting will continue to evolve. Companies should therefore not simply port every traditional campaign to ChatGPT, but should first understand the role that AI conversations play in their own customer journey.

Frequently asked questions

Where will ChatGPT ads appear?

Currently, ads will appear below the actual answers in the Free and Go plans. All paid versions will be ad-free.

Do the ads affect my conversation with ChatGPT?

No, according to OpenAI, the ads are in no way incorporated into the conversation with the language model; they are separate from the responses and clearly labeled as such. In terms of content, however, they may very well be based on the context of the current conversation.

Are ChatGPT Ads Replacing Regular Google Ads Now?

The fact that it is now possible to run ads on ChatGPT does not mean a complete shift away from ads on other digital platforms. A sound strategy and the strategic allocation of resources to the right channels remain the most effective ways to drive sales and conversions.
